2011 Thrift Wish List!

Angela from Bounty Huntress who was inspired by Van at Thrift Core has inspired me to create a 2011 thrift wish list.
  • Pee Wee Herman sheets, curtains or bed spread
  • Another heart chair, as I know they come in multiple colours
  • A beautiful credenza without that vintage odor!
  • Vintage sticker books kept by kids from the '70s, '80s & early '90s
  • Vintage Blythe doll (a boy can dream, can't he?)
  • Anything New Kids On The Block the early years

And also, wishes that we all have - finding works of art that are worth a ton of money & being able to a) recognize them & b) sell them. It can happen in your city! I also can't wait to see what the thrifts hold for me & everyone else who reads my blog & even those who have similar blogs whose I read & comment, but don't read nor comment back.

    Happy thrifting!

Another lot of stuff.

Majority of this was picked up along with the Cabbage Patch Kids mug in the previous post earlier this week on the same day. Care Bear stickers are from Funky Junky in Kensignton Market here in Toronto, they were having a 20% off sale, whole store was on sale, stickers were usually $3 each, they were selling for $1.50 each, so I picked up 4. Taxless. Maybe it's the season, but Funky Junky used to be my favourite shop in the city, but selection has went downhill, very downhill. Maybe it'll beef up again in spring when the garage sales start again. So that was $6. Aggie & I also discovered Big Fat Burrito, my new favourite place that I had once tried years ago with an ex. $6.00. By American Greetings Corporation, 1984.

We had went into Blue Banana Market in Kensignton Market & came upon the booth with the 'Keep Calm and Carry On' merch & lo & behold at Value Village I scored a 'Keep Calm and Carry On' 2011 day planner.. wonder why someone would buy a 2011 day planner & donate it before the year even started? Their loss, my gain. I always have trouble finding a decent day planner & this is exact how I like mine. It came along in a bag with some surprises, many which I left in the parking lot, but also with a Christmas Card Record Book. I already have two of these, they are the same, but I am glad to add another one to my collection. They have been preprinted with "19 " for the date entry at the top. I started to use one of the doubles, but had stopped sending out cards, even though I have plenty. $1.99

Last but not least, a Strawberry Shortcake sheet. She's not really my type, first of all, she's a woman, second of all she's short, I like them male & taller than me. I do like sheets, but I DO NOT like sheet face, not one bit. Strawberry is good. Finding 'the vintage smell' when you get home is bad. She's OK though. $3.99 & from 1980, she's cheap & older than me... but still, she's a woman.

Total: $12.76.

The Cabbage Patch Kids Have Their Revenge On Toronto..

I'm not big on the Cabbage Patch Dolls, especially in the dolls themselves, but throw a collectible from the '80s cheap enough in my face... I might buy it. I bought the plate from Goodwill for 99cents earlier this month & from a trip earlier this week I bought this Cabbage Patch Doll mug from Value Village also for 99cents. I find it interesting that the plate has the name also in French, considering it was Made in England, not Canada where 'we' are bi-lingual. Plate & mug are both from 1984. How exciting.

Total: $2.11.

Some recent purchases...

OK, things have been piling up at an alarming rate (literally), so today, if I keep my promise I'll have a couple of check ins each with a lump of recent finds. I had been planning on doing a Top 10 of 2010 round up at the end of the year, but the white card that the memory card goes into from the camera to go into the computer has been MIA, so, so have I, but I've still been in the thrifts, as always.

So we had gotten a "set" of vintage plastic snack bowls. It's obvious this isn't the whole "set", but after paying 99cents each, picking the caked on raisins off the side & giving it a wash on the pots & pans cycle & then a hand wash, it makes for the great bowls. I don't think I will display these like my glass set, just take these out for movies & sleepovers! They were $1.98 total at Goodwill.

Next we have a Dam Troll. I've never owned a Dam Troll. Would have been neat if it were a damn troll from the '60s, but you get what you get & I am pleased. I'll bring this guy out on holidays. Aggie & I were in Value Village awhile back (sometime in November?) & were strolling to the back to check out the sheets through the womens pants, passed the Xmas stuff in bags... me, "I think that's a Dam Troll!" *picking it up* "IT IS! IT IS! IT IS A DAM TROLL!" You can see for yourself, made in Denmark in 1989 #243. He reminds me of the song by the Violent Femmes, 'Blister In The Sun' the lyric... "big hands I know you're the one..". $3.37.

Last but not least is another troll - a hand carved troll from Norway, new with tags. I love her hair! $3.37 too! Got it from Value Village on the other side of town, same one where I got my NYform troll way back when.

Dukes of Hazzard Comforter

Not to long ago, probably sometime earlier this year, I had said that I would never purchase used bedding, well, people change. I've now started to collect it. Washing it promptly as it enters the house, in hot water.

Picked up this little beaut earlier tonight, made in 1982, in damn good condition. A nice Dukes of Hazzard comforter.

Anytime I place a blanket on the floor, Charlie takes over (yes, he's a pit bull!).

Making her first appearance on my blog, she's rather shy, Kleo Petra! She has taking a liking to the blanket to.. let's make it a family affair!

Total: $9.03.

Lush Life!

LUSH LIFE

"A free-spirited artist and an uptight businesswoman share an apartment".

Any opinions on Lori Petty? Remember back to the days of the original Melrose Place? Well for a couple weeks in the new season of Melrose came a show before it's time. Lori Petty's first gig since Tank Girl (a favourite movie of mine) - Lush Life! She starred in the show with Karyn Parsons, who most of you will know as Hillary from Fresh Prince of Bel Air. They went great together..

Lush Life On IMDB

Anyways.. my excitement.. after many searches & leads that went no where, I have discovered a small shop that seems to be operational still, since they have posting this December. Sent them a message 2 days ago, never heard back yet. Something I've wanted for years.. & they only want $10 for it! I hope they are going to respond & aren't just fluffing me off since I'm from Canada.. I'd be pissed! There's only one lone clip on Youtube (goes to show how hard this show is to find!), enjoy it!

$200 Winner from Smartwater!

Yup, your favourite 26 year old Canadian, male thrifting blogger won $200 from Smartwater last month just for becoming a friend of theirs on facebook & letting them know why I'd wanna win! I was a second place winner (yay!) which is a better thing, since the first prize would have better suited someone else & I am glad it did. I was under the impression that I was going to be getting a $200 Nike gift card.. you should have seen my shocked face when I opened up that envelope. THANKS SMARTWATER! It was a cheque.. not cash.. but I'm sure you'd rather see cash than a piece of sexy paper.

CHECK THEM OUT ON FB IF YOU WANT: smartwatercanada

This little piggy went to the market..

But how long was he gone & why did he just arrive now? Recently, and by that, I mean just today, I have been trying to figure out the age of the photographed coin banks. This is my collection so far & I plan on having it grow when the gems appear in the thrifts! I am not expecting ancient banks here, '80s, '70s was my guess. I did have one similar growing up for a few years, don't know whether it was a hand me down from either of my parents or my grandfather, just that I found it up in my closet when I was at the high point of my coin collecting! Was psyched to find a $1 bill in it.. this was probably 1994/95.

So, the owl bank (on the left) was made by Reliable Plastics. I do have strong feelings this guy is from the '70s.
The black bear (in the middle) was made by Regal Canada & has a stamp # of 010064 (if I can make it out correctly).
The pig (on the right) who is my favourite because he most resembles the puppy bank I had growing up seems to have been made by Regal Canada. Not stamped.

I have encountered one similar bank online, which is of the pig. Whomever owns the site posted that it was from Reliable Plastics, who we know made the same kind of banks, but a person in the comments (besides myself) has it stamped as Regal Canada. Maybe the other poster has one like mine, not exactly like theirs. They have also suggested that the pig is from the 1930's.

Anyway, any info I would love to hear! What got me on this was I picked up the black bear at Value Village the other day for $1.99 ($2.25 with taxes). I love these guys. The wife thinks they are creepy!

Cheer Bear Mug..

It's Cheer Bear!
Everyone's favourite Care Bare!
And he's in mug form!
PINK! PINK! PINK!

Now, he's not really my favourite Care Bear, maybe he's yours, but the Care Bear I care for the most is the cutest. I got this guy today. He was from Value Village near that one shop, he was $2.99 & did not have a used band aid in it like that 99cent little girls jewelry box we picked up. He is from the same year as me, 1984. He looks better for his age, though. He also costs a lot less than me at a ticket price of $2.99 ($3.37... REALLY...).

The other day I picked up a New Kids On The Block cassette single titled "Step by Step" from 1990 on CBS Records & lo & behold, when I arrive home to add it to my late '80s early '90s cassette singles collection, I already have it. So just in case one gets wrecked.. I gots another. Awhile ago, too, I bought the two DVDs pictured. Clueless & Prancer. Prancer is one of my all time favourite movies, I almost bought it the year before at the same Goodwill on some ripped up VHS, but got it for $2 on DVD. Had Clueless before, bought it from Value Village.. but turned out to be region 2 - BOO. But $2 later, I've got it again. $3.12 for all that.

Have you ever seen Prancer? I think it's a great movie.. watch the trailer.. it's Christmassy! When I was younger, we used to watch this movie every year during the last week of school before the holidays.. everyone dreaded it, but I thought it was great! My step sister had said she hated it at one point.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas...
The Christmas Season is my favourite season of the year. I love the holidays. I usually love the thrift shops in the holidays too! Lot's of vintage Santas, wrapping paper, stickers, bags, ribbon - everything to have that vintage Christmas you've been dreaming off. This year, however, just hasn't been too great. How have you found it? I found a couple of older Santas, but they just didn't fly. The only Christmas merch I picked up from the thrift store this year was these window stickings below, 99cents (& had been in the store since March!) & a Dam Troll from 1989 - made in Denmark. The troll was $2.99. You'll see a picture of him, just not today! He had dropped trou in the bag...

These pictures of the window stickings are the best, but they'll do. It's hard to get a fabulous picture of the CN Tower from this angle.. don't ya think? And the packaging suggested it was "easy to remove", not so. I ripped the poor guy holding the candy cane 3 times.. no wonder he was holding onto that candy cane.. he was holding on for dear life!

This were made in the USA in 1978 by Spearhead Marketing in Minneapolis, MN.

Sir Thrift A Lot's Holiday Giveaway!

Sir Thrift A Lot's Holiday Giveaway!

Now the item has nothing to do with the holidays, but it is the holiday season, so a holiday titled giveaway sounded great. I reckon it would arrive in time to make a nice Christmas present too. Anyways...

You may or may not know, I love a deal. Not just in a thrift store, but anywhere. I hoard items when they are cheap. I came across some awesome picture frames at The World's Biggest Bookstore here in Toronto, at a cheap, cheap price. My boyfriend pointed them out. I don't let many photos be taken of me, so we only needed one frame. I made him go out today & pick another one up for a giveaway!

So here it is..

Fred Products!

A while ago, thrifting, I picked up some Fred products for C-H-E-A-P. $1.99 for the lot. One is the "Oops! bottle opener & coaster". It's silicon, from 2005, made in China & still in the package.

Moving on to the next Fred Product, it's "Wine Lines: i.d. tags for your stemware." They are silicon, from 2006, made in China & still in the package.
